Day 86 Stopping at Atherstone
Boaters may know that there are good moorings to be had below Lock 5, with access to the town for shopping (Co-op and Aldi), with good TV and dongle signals.
The day we arrived, I saw the working boat Spey come down, pulling a butty.
nb Spey runs a single cylinder Bollinder - with no reverser?
Here the steerer stops the boat using a rope around the headstock of the lock, using the drag of the lock gate closing to hold the boat
Going down in Lock No.6, the steerer holds the boat forwards off the cill
Apparently, they had been down the North Oxford to buy this butty
Butty Betelgeuse is a Star Class Small Woolwich built in 1935
The next day, we awoke to the pound being well down!
I would say by about 12"
Fortunately, there was plenty of depth where we were!
